In recent years Pope Francis has opened the permanent lay ministry of Instituted Reader to women and to men not preparing for ordination, and created the lay ministry of Instituted Catechist. This Sunday he will institute ten lay ministers in Rome – including one from Wales!

The Pope will celebrate Mass in Rome for the Sunday of the Word of God, which this year falls on 22 January and has as its theme a verse from John’s Gospel, “We proclaim to you what we have seen” (1 Jn 1:3). He will confer of the Ministries of Reader and Catechist on lay men and women, three persons as Readers and seven as Catechists, coming from Italy, Congo, the Philippines, Mexico and Wales in the UK.

The Mass will be broadcast live by Vatican Media in conjunction with television networks around the world. It can be viewed from 8.30 am UK time on EWTN.
